Achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and improving the lives of millions hinges on strong, actionable data, insights, and metrics for planning and investments. At ExtraPortions, we have supported vulnerable and sick individuals with food and meals through the migrant crisis, COVID-19 crisis, and beyond. We identified and cataloged food availability points (volunteers and organizations supplying food) and then connected food seekers (whose information came from NGOs, covidmeals.org, and District Collectorates) to these suppliers.
In a country as vast as ours, where so many go hungry nightly (ranking 101 out of 116 on the Global Hunger Index 2021), a comprehensive registry of all food availability points is critically missing. Imagine a “Zomato” of free food points, constantly updated, allowing you to easily connect a hungry person by simply checking a map to find locations, phone numbers, and meal distribution times. Imagine this dashboard and map overlaid with vulnerability data and social metrics, using cross-linked analytics to create a “hunger map” with green, yellow, and red indicators of gap and fulfillment levels. Imagine the Public Distribution System (PDS), government agencies, and development sector NGOs planning investments based on these identified gaps and then being able to measure the impact of the investments.
Thanks to Hawkai Data’s highly effective technological approach and data platform, mapping this nationwide food grid is well underway. This model holds significant potential to provide insights into SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and a better measure of hunger.
